MATZO BROWNIES

In the Jewish custom, meat and dairy foods are not eaten at the same meal. Pareve (PAHR uh vuh), or neutral foods, such as eggs, are allowed. Margarine, if labeled pareve, is permitted.

 

4 oz. unsweetened chocolate
1/2 cup margarine (pareve)
2 cups sugar
4 eggs
1 cup matzo cake meal
1 Tbsp. brandy or water
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
Powdered sugar (optional)

In a saucepan melt chocolate and margarine over low heat. In a mixing bowl stir together chocolate mixture and sugar. Beat in eggs, one at a time, with an electric mixer on medium speed. Stir in matzo meal, brandy or water, and salt, Stir in walnuts. Pour into a greased 9x9x2-inch baking pan. Bake in a 350 degree F. oven for 30 minutes. Cool. If desired, place doily atop brownies; sprinkle with powdered sugar; remove doily. Cut into bars. Makes 16 brownies.
